When is the Right Time to Start Myopia Management?

Jun 1, 2026 | Children's Eye Care, Myopia Management

Is your child sliding a little closer to the TV during movie night or leaning in over homework at the kitchen table? At first, it might not seem like a big deal. Then their glasses prescription changes again at their next eye exam, and you start noticing a pattern.

At this point, parents often ask our eye doctors whether there’s more that can be done beyond stronger glasses

In this blog, we’ll talk about myopia management, how it helps protect children’s vision, and when the best time is to start treatment.

What is myopia?

Myopia (nearsightedness) happens when the eye grows slightly longer than normal, causing distance vision to become blurry while close-up objects remain clear. It often begins in childhood and tends to progress during the school years.

A comprehensive eye exam gives eye doctors a chance to track those changes over time and understand how quickly a child’s prescription is shifting. When myopia is progressing, it’s usually because the eye is gradually elongating.

That ongoing change is also what can increase the risk of certain eye diseases later in life. Myopia management focuses on slowing that progression, helping protect your child’s vision not just now, but as their eyes continue to develop.

When is the best time to start myopia management?

A question we hear often is, “Is it too early to start myopia management?” In most cases, earlier is better, especially once myopia has been diagnosed.

Myopia tends to progress the fastest during childhood, so starting management during these years gives your child’s eyes more support while they’re still developing.

Myopia management is often recommended when:

  • A child is diagnosed with nearsightedness at a young age
  • Prescription changes are happening quickly (often yearly or faster)
  • There is a family history of myopia
  • The child’s lifestyle includes a lot of near work or screen time

Even if your child’s vision seems “mild” right now, early treatment can help slow how quickly it progresses over time.

The best way to know for sure is through a pediatric eye exam, where our eye doctors can look at your child’s current prescription, how quickly it’s changing, and recommend the right timing based on their individual needs.

Myopia management options we offer

Different children respond better to different treatments, which is why we offer multiple options for myopia control. At Spring Hill Eyecare, myopia management may include:

  • Ortho-k (orthokeratology lenses): Special overnight contact lenses that can help slow myopia progression and gently reshape the cornea while your child sleeps, providing clear vision during the day without glasses or contacts.
  • Stellest® lenses: The first-ever FDA market-authorized spectacle lenses clinically proven to slow myopia progression in children.
  • MiSight® 1 day contact lenses: Daily disposable soft contact lenses designed for children to both correct vision and manage myopia progression. They are the first soft contact lenses proven to slow myopia progression in children aged 8–12 at the start of treatment.
  • Low-dose atropine eye drops: These prescription eye drops are used at bedtime to help slow how quickly myopia progresses.

Each option is selected based on your child’s age, prescription, lifestyle, and comfort level.

Signs it may be time for an eye exam

Many families don’t realize how quickly myopia can progress until prescriptions change every year. A pediatric eye exam can help identify these changes early, but there are also everyday clues parents may notice:

  • Moving closer to screens or holding books very close to their face
  • Squinting to see objects far away
  • Complaining of tired eyes or headaches
  • Struggling to see the board at school
  • Needing new glasses more frequently than expected

When these start becoming patterns, it’s best to see an eye doctor for a thorough evaluation.
